GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

The aim of the Ph.D. program in Architectural History is to promote knowledge production and documentation of different periods and geographical areas of architectural culture and built environment through teaching and original research with historiographical and theoretical rigor; to familiarize students with both different perspectives on architectural history and recent developments in the humanities and social sciences at large; and by doing so, to train experts equipped with the requisite knowledge, analytical skills and initiative to undertake duties at academic institutions, research centers and relevant state institutions as architectural historians; to competently take part in international scholarship and assume an active role in institutionalizing architectural history in Turkey.

Research interests and disciplinary backgrounds of the staff cover various fields of history and theory of art and architecture. METU Graduate Program in Architectural History is offered within the Department of Architecture but is integrated with the Institute of Social Sciences and shaped by the concerns of the humanities.

There is no disciplinary limitation for the applicants, but applications from the graduates of architecture and related fields in the fine arts, humanities and social sciences are especially invited. Applicants from all fields are required to demonstrate their interest and familiarity with architectural history through transcripts, satisfactory performance in entrance examinations and a portfolio. Proficiency in English is required of all applicants.

Accepted students may be asked to attend undergraduate courses in architectural history at the METU Department of Architecture before enrolling in the program. Ph.D. students are required to take eight courses (min. 24 credits), pass the qualification exam and write a dissertation for graduation.
