    ÇEVRE MÜHENDİSLİĞİ DOKTORA PROGRAMI

    Programın Amacı


    Uygulanan programın amacı karmaşık çevre mühendisliği problemlerine çözümler getirebilecek öğrenciler yetiştirmektir. Bu da biyolojik, kimyasal ve fiziksel oluşumları anlayabilmeyi, mühendislik prensiplerini bilmeyi, laboratuvar ve hesaplama becerilerine sahip olmayı ve bilgisayar bilgisini çevre problemlerin analizi ve çözümü için kullanabilmeyi gerektirir.

    THEORY AND APPLICATION OF FILTRATION

    The theory and the application of deep bed filtration. The kinetics of filtration. The hydraulics of filtration and backwash. Mathematical models and solution methods. Computer aided design and modeling. Experimental approaches.

    THEORY AND APPLICATION OF COAGULATION & FLOCCULATION
    Theory of coagulation and flocculation processes and their applications in environmental engineering. Destabilization of colloids. Classifications of polymers used in water treatment. Mechanisms of coagulation with polymers. Laboratory tests on use of aluminum, ferric salts and polymers in local drinking water sources. Application of alum salts and polymers in local water treatment plants. Use of microsand as a coagulant aid. Enhanced coagulation.

    THEORY AND APPLICATION OF SEDIMENTATION & FLOTATION

    Theory and application of sedimentation. Theory and application of flotation. Mathematical models and computer aided solution methods. Practical engineering design methods.

    MEMBRANE PROCESSES           
    Classification of separation techniques, osmosis and osmotic pressure, kinds of membranes, cellulose acetate and polyamide membranes, properties, pretreatment of sea water and brackish water before reverse osmosis, economics of reverse osmosis and comparison with other desalination techniques such as ultrafiltration and electrodialysis. 

    ADVANCED ANAEROBIC TREATMENT
    Possibilities and potentials of anaerobic wastewater treatment and operation of anaerobic reactors. Understanding the principles of anaerobic biochemistry and microbiology. Advantages and disadvantages of anaerobic treatment. Introduction of developments in anaerobic reactor technologies. Understanding the tools for process monitoring and control. Learning and conducting the treatability and toxicity assays.

    ADVANCED TOPICS IN AIR POLLUTION      
    Meteorology for modeling and control of air pollution; the physical and thermodynamic properties of the atmosphere, equations of motion, hydrostatic equation, continuity equation, Geostrophic approximation, geopotential height, thermal wind, baroclinic and barotropic atmosphere, atmospheric stability and inversion. Air pollution concentration models; fixed-box models, diffusion models. Primary particulate control. Control of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.

    ADVANCED TOPICS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING   
    Various advanced level topics on environmental engineering will be covered. Complex and realistic mathematical models and computer applications or advanced level experimental studies will be conducted. Topics are selected according to the need of students and interest of the instructor.

    ADVANCED TOPICS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY  
    Advanced level topics in biotechnology. Different topics will be covered according to the need of students and interest of the instructor.

    SPECIAL TOPICS IN ADVANCED AIR POLLUTION
    Contents will be determined among advanced air pollution subjects according to the needs of the students and the interests of the instructor.

    SPECIAL TOPICS IN AIR POLLUTION MODELING
    Contents will be determined among air pollution modeling according to the needs of the students and the interests of the instructor.

    SPECIAL TOPICS IN ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES
    Application of UV/O 3 , UV/H 2 O 2 , UV/TiO 2 , O 3 /H 2 O 2 , O 3 /FeOOH, O 3 /TiO 2 /UV techniques for the removal of substances that cannot be oxidized using simple oxidation techniques.

    ADVANCED TOPICS IN HAZARDOUS AND TOXIC WASTES TREATMENT & CONTROL
    Fundamentals of Hazardous and Toxic waste treatment. Current management practices. Thermal and disposal methods. Site remediation.

    ADVANCED BIOLOGICAL NUTRIENT REMOVAL
    Design principles of biological nutrient removal. Study of ATV 131 and activated sludge models.

    HUMIC SUBSTANCES IN NATURAL WATERS
    Characterization and classification of aqvatic humic substances. Molecular sizes and molecular structures. Isolation of humic substances from natural waters. Effects of humic substances in drinking water treatment. Influence of humic substances on fate and treatment of pollutants. Treatment techniques for humic substance removal.

    ADVANCED WATER CHEMISTRY
    Concept in Aquatic Chemistry. Ways to Interpret Changes in Physical/Chemical Systems. Acid/Base Chemistry. Gas/Liquid Equilibrium. Chemistry of Metals. Software for Solving Chemical Equilibrium problems.

    REMOVAL OF REFRACTORY ORGANICS
    Measurement of Refractory Organics. Removal of Refractory Organics. Carbon Adsorption. Chemical Oxidation. Advanced Chemical Oxidation Methods.

    DIFFUSION IN THE ENVIRONMENT  
    Diffusion is the tendency of molecules to spread into an available space. This tendency is a result of the intrinsic thermal energy (heat) found in all molecules at temperatures above absolute zero. This class focuses on the diffusion processes that occur in the environment and covers molecular diffusion, turbulent diffusion, atmospheric diffusion, mixing in rivers, mixing in reservoirs, mixing in estuaries, river, estuary and reservoir models, relative diffusion.

    ADVANCED SOLID WASTE SYSTEMS & SOLID WASTE ANALYSIS
    Intensive research in all areas of solid waste management. Waste stream analysis, including hazardous products and biomedical wastes. Waste reduction and mechanical separation. Waste recyling and resuse. Kitchen and yard waste composting. Novel design of landfills. Leachate and gas production and environmental impact assessment. Incineration, composting and anaerobic digestion. Alternative solid waste treatment and disposal methods and their place in the integrated solid waste management system.

    ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION
    Mechanisms of atmospheric dispersion. Meteorology for air pollution dispersion modeling. Eulerian and Lagrangian modeling techniques. Air pollutant dispersion models; fixed-box models, diffusion models, plume rise, long-term average uses of Gaussian plume models, pollutant creation and decay in the atmosphere, multiple cell models, receptor-oriented and source-oriented air pollution models, building wakes, aerodynamic downwash, effects of topography, EPA-recommended models, other models.

    PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY FOR ENV. ENGG.           
    The theory of particulate technology, application in environmental engineering. The characterization of particulates. Hydraulics of porous bed. Fluidization theory and applications in filter backwash. Applications in sedimentation. Applications in air pollution control and modeling.

    ION EXCHANGE PROCESSES   
    Chemistry, theory and applications of ion exchange. Applications in water and wastewater treatment. Mathematical models and computer aided design methods.
     
    THEORY AND APPLICATION OF ADSORPTION      
    The theory and application of adsorption theory. Applications in water and wastewater treatment. Mathematical models and computer aided modeling techniques. Similarities with filtration models.

    TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES OF WASTEWATER SLUDGES                                 
    Techniques for economic and efficient treatment and landfilling of sludge generated from wastewater treatment, equipments used for that purpose.
