    MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM

    The M.S. Program in Electrical and Electronic Engineering comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work and a thesis. The total number of credits is composed of at least 12 credits of option courses, and 12 credits of elective courses. Option courses are chosen, with the approval of the student's advisor, from among the courses related to one of the following three options: Electronics, Control Systems, Information and Information and Communication.

    Elective courses may be chosen from among the graduate courses offered in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and from the courses offered by the Institute for Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering, subject to the approval of the student's advisor.

    Theory and practice of computer communication networks. The layered approach and International Standardization Organization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model (OSI/RM) principles. Physical communication media. Data link layer and reliability of logical links. Multiplexing, switching, and multiple access methods. Network layer routing via X.25 and Internet Protocol (IP); congestion control. Transport protocols: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Local area networks and performance analysis.

    Advanced data transport and switching concepts. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) principles. Optical networking. High speed switching. Performance issues: queuing theory and delay models in computer networks. Elements of the presentation layer. Application protocols: message handling systems, database applications, network management, World Wide Web (WWW), multimedia.

    EE 544 Data Compression (Veri Sikistirma) (3+0+0) 3
    Lossles and lossy compression techniques and their mathematical basis. Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, various dictionary coding techniques including the Lempel-Ziv techniques; scalar and vector quantization, differential encoding, transform coding, and subband coding.

    EE 545 Wireless Networks and Mobile Systems I (3+0+0) 3 (ECTS: 7)

    Characteristics and operations of wireless networks: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and Bluetooth wireless area networks. Mobile Internet Protocol (IP) and mobile ad hoc routing protocol. Middleware application program interfaces (APIs) to realize mobile applications. Basic functionality provided by middleware for peer to peer (P2P) computing. Design, implementation and testing of mobile applications.

    Routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks mobile Internet Protocol (IP) principles. Operation of IP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Networks Address Translation (NAT).     EE 550 Artificial Neural Networks (Yapay Sinir Aglari) (3+0+0) 3
    Principles of Neural Computing. Architectural analysis of different neural network models (Hopfield model, Single Perceptron, Multilayer Perceptron etc.). Learning algorithms. Back propagation algorithm and local minima problem. Dynamics of recurrent neural networks. Applications of neural networks for control systems, system identification, associative memories, optimization problem etc. Computer simulation homeworks and final project.

    EE 551 Robust Control (Dayanikli Denetim) (3+0+0) 3
    Norms for signals and systems. Internal stability. Youla parametrization of all internally stabilizing compensators. Additive and multiplicative plant uncertainty. Robust stability and robust performance against plant uncertainties. Solution of the robust performance problem via loopshaping. Pick-Nevanlinna Interpolation Problem and its application to model matching. Modified robust performance problem (mixed sensitivity problem): Solution via spectral factorization and model matching. Phase and gain margin optimization.

    Introduction to digital control of analogue systems. Sampling, quantizing and coding. The z-transformation and its properties, the inverse z-transformation. Discretization techniques, discrete-time equivalence of continuous-time systemsand filters. Transient and steady-state analysis of discrete-time systems, stability analysis. Design of digital controllers based on root locus methods and frequency response methods. State-space analysis of discrete-time system and controller design by pole-placement. Introduction to discrete-time optimal control design.

    Spectral estimation problem. Nonparametric techniques: periodogram and correlogram methods; asymptotic properties; statistical analysis; windowed spectrum methods. Parametric methods for rational spectra: Auto Regressive (AR), Moving Average (MA) and Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) models; Yule-Walker equations and least-squares methods; Levinson-Durbin algorithm; Prony's method.     Metric spaces, normed vector spaces, basis sets. The four subspaces of the linear transforms. Approximation in Hilbert spaces: least squares filtering and estimation, linear regression, polynomial approximation, minimum norm solutions and system identification. Matrix factorization, eigenvectors, singular value decomposition, iterative matrix inverses, pseudoinverse. Theory of constrained optimization and dynamic programming.

    Image spaces. Variational optimization, variational image processing: restoration and denoising. Curves: representations, characterizations and evolution. Medial axis transform.     Time-frequency signal decomposition. Block transforms, subband filters, wavelet decomposition. Orthogonality, transform efficiency, coding gain performance. Wavelet transform: regularity, 2-channel filterbanks, wavelet families. DCT, Lapped Orthogonal Transforms, other transforms. Parametric modeling of signal sources.

    Extraction of low-level features, boundary and region based analysis, segmentation and grouping, lightness and color, shape from shading. Photometric and binocular stereo, optical flow and motion estimation, strongly-modeled vision, weakly-modeled vision recognition, integration and vision systems, real-time vision.

    Characteristics of random processes. Correlation function and power spectral density of stationary processes. Noise mechanisms, the Gaussian and Poisson processes. Statistical estimation theory, linear mean square filtering, optimum Wiener and Kalman filtering. Signal detection theory and statistical significance tests.

    Signal spaces and system analysis in digital communication. Characterization of communication channels and modulation methods under the constraints of both noise and finite bandwidth. Linear and nonlinear signaling techniques under additive white Gaussian noise. Basic equalization techniques. Adaptive equalization. Multichannel and multicarrier systems. Spread spectrum techniques and multiuser communications.

    Introduction to algebra and Galois fields. Various error control coding techniques including linear block codes, cyclic codes, BCH and Reed-Solomon codes, convolution codes. Viterbi algorithm. Trellis coded modulation.

    Definitions of L2, L , H2 and H spaces, Background on linear operators. Nehari Problem. Co-prime factorizations over H , parametrization of internally stabilizing compensators and reduction of the H - Optimal Control Problem to a model matching problem. Solution of the one-sided model matching problem via Nehari Theorem for SISO systems. Canonical inner-outer, spectral and J-spectral factorizations for MIMO systems.     EE 670 Adaptive Filter Theory (Uyarlamali Suzgec Kurami) (3+0+0) 3
    Study of the mathematical theory of various realizations of linear filters. Detailed study of linear optimum filtering, namely Wiener filtering, linear prediction, and Kalman filtering. FIR structures versus lattice filter structures. Method of least squares, comparative study of steepest descent, least-mean sequare (LMS) and recursive least squares (RLS) filter design algorithms.

    Classical statistical decision theory, decision criteria and composite hypothesis tests. Receiver operating characteristics and error probability, applications to radar and communications.
