    MAKİNE MÜHENDİSLİĞİ DOKTORA PROGRAMI

    Programın Amacı


    Doktora programının amacı, öğrencilere bağımsız araştırma yapma, olayları bilimsel olarak geniş ve derin bir bakış açısı ile inceleyerek ve irdeleyerek yorum yapma ve yeni sentezlere ulaşmak için gerekli adımları belirleme yeteneğini kazandırmaktır.

    Bilimsel Hazırlık Programı Gerektiren Bilim Alan ve Dalları      
    Makine Mühendisliğinden farklı bilim dallarından mezun olmuş öğrenciler, fark derslerini Bilimsel Hazırlık Programı’ndan alırlar. Bilimsel Hazırlık Programı’ndan 3 den fazla ders alma gereksinimi olanlar Bilimsel Hazırlık Programı’na katılmak zorundadır. Bilimsel Hazırlık Programı’nda 2 yarıyılda toplam 30 kredi saatinden fazlasını gerektiren dallardan mezun olmuş öğrenciler lisansüstü programına alınmazlar.

    DERS İÇERİKLERİ

    CONTINUUM MECHANICS
    Principles and applications of continuum mechanics. Kinematics of deformation. Thermomechanical conservation laws. Stress and strain measures. Constitutive equations. Solution of some basic problems for various materials as relevant in materials science, fluid dynamics, and structural analysis. Inherently nonlinear phenomena in continuum mechanics.
          
    CONDUCTION HEAT TRANSFER
    Lumped, differential, and integral formulations of conduction. 2 and 3-D steady state conduction, product solutions in terms of orthogonal functions, transient heat flow. Computational conduction: finite difference versus finite element methods. Various applications.
          
    ADVANCED TOPICS IN ROBOTICS
    Redundancy of mechanical manipulators. Differential kinematics and redundancy. manipulatibility. Local optimization of kinematic redundancy. Global optimization of kinematic redundancy. Kinematics and dynamics of multirobot coordination. Clodes link robotic mechanisms. singularity analysis of redundant robot manipulators.
          
    RELIABILITY IN DESIGN
     Introduction to reliability, availability, maintainability. Product liability and reliability economics. Use of probability and distributions: data analysis, hazard plotting and estimation, sources of error, reliability concepts in design, fault trees, design review procedures, and reliability evaluation techniques. Specification, prediction and evaluation of product reliability and mainatainability. Design methods for increasing reliability and maintainability.
          
    FATIGUE IN MACHINE DESIGN
    A broad treatment of stress, strain and strength with reference to engineering design and analysis. Analytical and experimental determination of stresses in relation to the fatigue strength properties of machine and structural components. Consideration of deflection, post-yield behavior, residual stresses, temperature and corrosion effects.
          
    PRODUCT DESIGN
    Project centered course addressing transformation of ideas into successful products which are properly matched to the user and the market. A more complete view of a new product to gain experience with designs judged on their aesthetics, ease of use, and sensitivities to the realities of the marketplace. Lectures on design process, industrial design, visual communication, form-giving, mass production, marketing and environmentally conscious design. Term project. Guest lecturers from industry whenever possible.
          
    KNOWLEDGE -BASED DESIGN OF SYSTEMS
    Design philosophy and knowledege-based systems. Representation of design knowledge. Reasoning in design. Constraint handling. Goal satisfaction. Knowledge based design strategies. Learning and creativity in design systems.
          
    INTELLIGENT CONTROL SYSTEMS
    Control techniques. Overview of fuzzy logic. System identification and control system design stages. Fuzzy logic controllers. Applications of fuzzy logic control. Adaptive control systems in fuzzy logic. Neural networks architecture in control. Neural control systems and neural-fuzzy control systems. Genetic algorithm aid to fuzzy control systems. Rule-based control systems. Case studies.
          
    METAL FORMING
    Stress and strain, work hardening, plastic instability, strain rate and temperature, ideal work or uniform energy, slab analysis: force balance, slip line field theory, deformation zone geometry, formability, bending, plastic anisotropy.
          
    KINEMATIC SYNTHESIS OF MECHANISMS
    Number, function and motion synthesis. Path and function synthesis of mechanisms with and without prescribed points. Motion synthesis with four and five prescribed points. Synthesis of multi-loop mechanisms. kinematic modelling of spatial mechanisms. Vector synthesis of spatial mechanisms. Use of intelligent techniques in kinematic synthesis of mechanisms.
          
    SPECIAL TOPICS IN DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING
    Doctoral level topics in the areas of design and manufacturing that are not covered in the existing curriculum. Arranged depending on available faculty and student interest.
          
    SPECIAL TOPICS IN MECHANICS AND CONTROL
    Doctoral level topics in the areas of mechanics and control that are not covered in the existing curriculum. Arranged depending on available faculty and student interest.

    MODERN POWER PLANT SYSTEMS
    Review of power plant thermodynamics (1st and 2nd laws, Carnot, Rankine, gas turbine and combined cycles); Steam turbines, gas turbines and combined cycles; Combustion of fossil fuels /biomass ; gasification of fossil fuels /biomass; Hydrogen , its production and storage; Reaction thermodynamics and kinetics; Electrochemical reactions;  low and high temperature fuel cells; Renewable energy based  power plants (solar, wind , geothermal power plants ); Efficiency and environmental aspects
          
    ADVANCED COMBUSTION
    Advanced tratment of fundamental combustion proceses, conservation equations for reacting gas mixture, the structure of one-dimensional diffusion and premixed flames, 2-dimensional Burke-Schuman flames, and boundary layer combustion, flame instabilities and flame stretch, turbulent combustion.
          
    ENERGY DECISION SUPPORT TOOLS
    Integrated energy-economy- environmental models, reference energy system design, energy conversion technologies, energy end-use technologies, demand side management, energy end-use efficiency, advanced local energy planning, MARKAL, ANSWER, EFOM (energy flow optimization model), energy technology systems analysis program.
          
    COMPRESSIBLE FLUID FLOW
    Fundemental survey of compressibility effects in transient and steady flows, examples from engineering practice, sound propagation steady one dimensional flow with area change, shock and detonation waves, friction and energy exchange, unsteady one dimensional flows, wave phenomena, method of characteristics, 2-D subsonic and supersonic flows, introduction to the numerical solution technics for the hyperbolic equations.
          
    TURBULENCE MODELING
    URANS and RANS equations, Free and wall turbulence, Bousinesque constitutive relations, zero-equation models. One and two-equation turbulence modeling, k-eps and k-omega models. RNG k-eps model. Low-Reynolds-number two-equation models. Reynolds stress models, modeling turbulence in variable density, compressible and compressed flows. Low-Re number RSTM. Algebraic stress model. Nonlinear k-epsilon models, LES and DNS simulations.
          
    DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING
    Overview of design process. Serial design process. Design for manufacturing (DFM). Cost of engineering changes. DFM guidelines. Design science. Axiomatic design. Design for assembly (DFA). Taguchi method for robust design. Manufacturing process design rules. Group technology. Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). Value engineering. Design process improvements. Term projects.
          
    NONLINEAR DYNAMIC SYSTEMS
    Introduction to nonlinear systems. Methods of analysis. Phase space analysis. Limit cycle analysis. Equilibrium solutions and linear stability. Liapunov functions and Liapunov theory of system stability. poincare perturbation method. methods of simplifying dynamical systems. Local bifurcations.
          
    COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING
    Role of computer in manufacturing, hardware and software components for computer automation, advanced computer architecture used in manufacturing, manufacturing systems, control of manufacturing equipment, computer controlled parts handling and assembly, programmable factory.
          
    COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS II
    Comparision of direct and iterative methods, shock-capturing methods, numerical methods for boundary layer type equations, grid generations, the finite element method, discretization of the domain, interpolation polynomials, formulation of element characteristic matrices and vectors, variational and weighted residual approaches, application to thermal and fluid flow analysis.
          
    MATERIALS IN MANUFACTURING AND DESIGN
    Material selection on the basis of cost, strength, formability, and machinability. Advanced strength analysis of heat-treated and cold-formed parts including axial, bending, shear and cyclic deformation. Correlations of functional specifications and process capabilities. Problems in redesign for producibility and reliability.
          
    TOTAL QUALITY DEVELOPMENT
    Total development process that begins with strategic needs and voice of customer and con­cludes with a new product in production. Topics include House of Quality, Pugh Concept Se­lection, Extended and Enhanced QFD, Robustness optimization (Taguchi), on-line QC, and holistic management. All topics are integrated into world-class concurrent engineering, an in-depth enhancement of basic TQM.
          
    PRODUCTION TOOLING   
    Types of tooling, tool materials, economics, selection, life and wear. Single point tools (HSS and carbides) for turning, boring, shaping and slotting. Classification, selection, design and manufacturing of multi-point tools including drills, taps, dies, milling cutters, broaches, hobs and grinding wheels. Principles of jig and fixture design for simple parts. Design and manufacturing of dies for sheet metal, plastic moulding, forging and other special tools.
          
    TELEROBOTICS AND HUMAN SUPERVISORY CONTROL      
    History of supervisory control. Supervisory and human supervisory control. Telepresence. Supervisory control of anthropomorhic teleoperators for space and undersea applications. Force feedback and impedance control of telerobots. Supervisory control in transportation and automating.
          
    BOUNDARY LAYER THEORY  
    Navier-Stokes equations, boundary layer concept, similarity solutions, transformations methods, integral and finite difference solution techniques, turbulent boundary layers, various other parabolic type flows, eg. Free jets and wakes.
          
    MODERN POWER PLANT DESIGN
    Thermodynamic analysis of  power plants with special emphasize on subsystem selection, system integration and balance of plant; mass, energy balances; calculation of 1st and 2nd law efficiencies; design of combustor and/or gasifier; fuel conversion ; emission reduction options; utilization of simulation programs and preparation of own codes. Creative term projects will be assigned to be worked out if needed with experts from the actual power generation arena.  Modern systems such as IGCCs , and fuel cell integrated power generation options will be emphasized.
          
    RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER
    Electromagnetic, optical and quantum aspects of radiative equilibrium, shape factors, gas radiation, radiation exchance with transmitting, reflecting and absorbing media, interaction of radiation with conduction and convection, remote temperature sensing, solar radiation, computational tratment of radiation heat transfer.
          
    GAS TURBINE DESIGN
    Introduction to combustion for gas turbines, gas turbine fuels, fuel injectors, inlet diffuser design, combustion chamber flow path design, primary zone design, combuster cooling, recent developments.
          
    WIND POWER SYSTEM DESIGN
    Introduction to wind energy, historical background on windmills, wind turbines- design and components, the wind, wind turbine dimensioning, wind pumping systems, electrical power generating systems, controlling wind turbines, dynamic problems of wind turbines, off-shore wind farms.
