    MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM

    The M.S. Program in Chemistry is comprised of 8 courses (minimum of 24 credits), a Master thesis, two seminars and a graduate seminar (CHEM 579). Advanced Organic Chemistry and Advanced Physical Chemistry are the two required courses for this program. Two of the remaining six courses can be taken from graduate courses offered by other departments with the permission of the student's advisor.


    COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

    CHEM 511 Advanced Organic Chemistry (Ileri Organik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    An intensive study of selected advanced topics related to current research in organic chemistry.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 512 Advanced Physical Chemistry (Ileri Fiziksel Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    An intensive study of selected advanced topics related to current research in physical chemistry such as thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy, bulk electric and magnetic properties, macromolecular physical chemistry, molecular structure and applied numerical methods.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 513 Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Ileri Analitik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    An intensive survey of selected advanced topics related to current research in analytical chemistry.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 514 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (Ileri Anorganik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    Elementary structure and stereochemistry, symmetry and group theory, spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, crystallography.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 515 Advanced Biochemistry (Ileri Biyo-Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    A survey of the recent advances in biochemistry and/or study of the more specialized areas in biochemistry which are not included in the earlier biochemistry courses, such as plant biochemistry, biological membranes, biochemistry of the nervous system, biochemistry of human disorders, biochemical toxicology, etc.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 522 Advanced Computational Chemistry (2+0+2) 3
    (Ileri Hesaplamali Kimya)

    Potential energy surfaces and geometry optimizations, frequency calculations, effect of basis sets, chemical reactions and reactivity calculations, modeling systems in solutions.

    CHEM 531 Mechanical Properties of Polymers (3+0+0) 3
    (Polimerlerin Mekanik Ozellikleri)

    Mechanical properties of polymers and typical polymer transitions. Deformation mechanisms; viscous flow, elasticity, rubberlike elasticity and viscoelasticity. Effect of molecular structure and environment on mechanical properties of polymers. Experimental methods used in determination of mechanical properties of polymers including melt flow index, tensile, tear, stress relaxation, creep, impact, fatigue, abrasion, hardness and dynamic mechanical tests together with their ASTM references.

    CHEM 533 Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Sentetik Organik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    Synthesis of organic compounds, modern laboratory techniques, oxidation, reduction, condensation, alkylation reactions, separation and purification methods. Six hours of laboratory per week.
    Prerequisite: CHEM 202.

    CHEM 534 Physical Organic Chemistry (Fiziksel Organik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    Effects of structure, resonance, inductance and medium effects on chemical and physical properties of organic molecules and intermediates, developments in mechanistic pathways.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 535 Polymer Chemistry (Polimer Kimyasi) (3+0+0) 3
    Introduction to polymers, synthesis; mechanism, reaction rates, chemical reactions of polymers, production of industrially important polymers.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 536 Structural Polymer Chemistry (Yapisal Polimer Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    Physical properties of polymer: phase transitions, solubility, crystallization and crystal structures, viscoelastic behavior; property-structure relationships. Examination of industrial operations such as molding, extrusion, drawing, etc.
    Prerequisite: CHEM 535.

    CHEM 537 Polymer Characterization (Polimer Karakterizasyonu) (3+0+0) 3
    Fundamental concepts in polymer analysis and characterization. Sampling and sample preparation. Extraction and analysis of extracts; UV, VIS, IR, NMR and MS. Determination of molecular weights of polmers by functional group analysis, measurements of colligate properties, light scattering, ultracentrifugation and dilute solution viscocity. Fraction of polymers by solubility and size exclusion chromatography (SEC).

    CHEM 538 Polymer Applications (Polimer Uygulamalari) (3+0+0) 3
    Synthesis and important applications of polymers such as liquid crystalline polymers for optical information storage, water soluble polymers as drug carriers and their oil recovery properties, biodegradable polymer systems for biomedical and biotechnological applications, conducting polymers, photopolymers for coating applications, polymeric catalysts and adhesives.

    CHEM 539 Polymer Composites (Polimer Kompozitleri) (3+0+0) 3
    Synthesis and manufacture of fiber reinforced polymers. Synhtesis of modern engineering thermoplastics and liquid molding resins and fibers and fillers such as glass fiber, carbon fiber and particulate fillers. The chemistry of silane and titane coupling agents and measurement of fiber-matrix adhesion. Resin transfer molding, sheet and bulk molding compounds, open mold and spray-up techniques and filament winding operations. Industrial use of polymer composites in infrastructure, building, automotive, aircraft, sports and defense industries.

    CHEM 545 Natural Products (Dogal Urunler) (3+0+0) 3
    Methods of isolation, chemical and spectral structure determinations, synthesis and biosynthetic origins of natural products are discussed. Medicinal applications of naturally occurring alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids and flavonoids are covered.

    CHEM 547 Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds (3+0+0) 3
    (Heterosiklik Bileþiklerin Kimyasi)

    Chemical properties of heterocyclic compounds. Synthesis, reactions and reaction mechanisms of heterocyclic compounds.

    CHEM 554 Chemical Thermodynamics and Kinetics (3+0+0) 3
    (Kimyasal Termodinamik ve Kinetik)

    Thermodynamics of surfaces, thermodynamics of gas adsorption model, thermodynamics of elastic systems, ideal rubber, elasticity of a linear polymer chain, thermodynamics of an elastic adsorbent, imperfect gases and solution, osmotic pressure and the Donnan equilibrium, single phase binary solution, thermodynamics of an electric field, thermodynamics of a magnetic field, thermodynamics, of small systems, irreversible thermodynamics.

    CHEM 555 Quantum Chemistry (Kuantum Kimyasi) (3+0+0) 3
    Mathematical and descriptive treatment of quantum mechanics as applied to chemical bonding and spectroscopy.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 556 Statistical Thermodynamics (Istatistiksel Termodinamik) (3+0+0) 3
    A review of thermodynamics, introduction to independent localized systems (Boltzmann Statics), average distribution for localized particles, classical statistical mechanics, partition functions and thermodynamic functions of an ideal gas, symmetry numbers, chemical equilibrium, the perfect gas equilibrium, the molecular partition function in terms of local bond properties, the transition state theory of chemical kinetics, the liquid state.

    CHEM 559 Surface and Colloidal Chemistry (3+0+0) 3
    (Kolloid ve Yuzey Kimyasi)

    Introduction to surface chemistry and the colloidal state, the liquid-gas and liquid-liquid interfaces, electrical phenomena at interfaces, colloidal solutions, emulsions, foams, aerosols and gels.

    CHEM 561 Advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (3+0+0) 3
    (Ileri Nukleer Manyetik Resonans Spektrometresi)

    Basic NMR theory and instrumentation, NMR parameters, chemical shift, spin-spin coupling, analysis of complex spin systems, nuclear overhouser effect, principles of pulse NMR and application on proton and insensitive nuclei such as 13C, 15N, 17O, complex pulse sequences, two dimensional NMR (COSY, HETCOR, INADEQUATE, NOESY), dynamic NMR.


    CHEM 571 Photochemistry (Fotokimya) (3+0+0) 3
    Light, waves, atoms and molecules. Electromagnetic radiation, energy levels in atoms, molecular orbitals and electronic states vibrational and rotational energies, potential energy functions, electronic transitions, selection rules, the Frank-Condon principle, light absorption and its physical consequences, characteristics of photochemical reactions, decay and deactivation of excited atoms, diatomic molecules and polyatomic molecules. Light absorption by atoms, primary products case studies, experimental and theoretical selected research topics.

    CHEM 579 Graduate Seminar (Lisansustu Seminer) (0+1+0) 0 P/F
    The widening of students' perceptive and awareness of topic of interest to chemistry through seminar offered by faculty, guest speakers and graduate students.

    CHEM 591 M.S. Seminar I (Yuksek Lisans Semineri) (1+0+0) 1
    Students give a seminar on a chosen topic of interest (preferably related to their research). A literature survey and a well organized seminar is required.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 592 M.S. Seminar II (Yuksek Lisans Semineri II) (1+0+0) 1
    Continuation of CHEM 501.

    CHEM 601 Ph.D. Seminar I (Doktora Semineri I) (1+0+0) 1
    Students give a seminar on a chosen topic of interest (preferably related to their research). A literature survey and a well organized seminar is required.

    Selected topics related to the chemical sciences involving theory, practice and research on current chemical problems.

    CHEM 648 Organometallic Chemistry (Organometalik Kimya) (3+0+0) 3
    The chemistry of organometallic compounds with emphasis on the chemistry of organ-transition metal complexes, their methods of synthesis, theories of bonding and structure.
    Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

    CHEM 653 Gas Kinetics (Gazlarin Kinetigi) (3+0+0) 3
    Potential energy surfaces, activation energy, pre-exponential factors, activated complex theory, bimolecular Collision dynamics, reactions, Lindemannn's theory, Hinstelwood's treatment, RRK and RRKM theories. Sloter's theory, other "inprinciple" theories, stochastic processes.

    CHEM 655 Chemistry of Free Radicals (Serbest Radikaller Kimyasi) (3+0+0) 3
    The production and reaction of radicals. The techniques for quantitative estimation of thermochemical data reaction-rate parameters for radical reactions in gas phase. Transition state theory and other relevant theories (BEBO, ETC.).

    CHEM 657 Molecular Spectroscopy (Molekuler Spektroskopi) (3+0+0) 3
    Spectra of atoms, rotational and electronic spectra of molecules. Application of quantum mechanics to the theoretical determination of energies and structure.

    CHEM 699 Guided Research (Yonlendirilmiþ Araþtirmalar) (2+4+0) 4
    Research in the field of chemistry, by arrangement with members of the faculty; guidance of doctoral students towards the preparation and presentation of a research proposal.
